Happy Thanksgiving!

…and here is an article that covers families, technology and the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Tech-Support Generation: “Millions of young Americans will head home next week to give thanks, eat turkey and fix their parents computers”

It’s funny because it’s true: At my parents, I spent about an hour trying to rid my Dad’s PC of spyware and getting him up-to-date with protection. The two of us were sitting in his study, and my Mom comes in yelling that we’re being “anti-social”.

Establish a family computer routine

An article from Microsoft, with some good tips on the need to
establish a family computer routine:

Even if you’re fortunate enough to have separate computers for adults and children, you still have to deal with kids sharing a computer, as well as setting standards for when and what a computer is used for especially when homework comes into play.

The article goes on to offer 7 valuable tips on happy, healthy computing at home. A worthwhile read.

ComputerTime 1.0 is Available!

After more than a year of design, development and testing, we have released ComputerTime!

We feel great about it. It feels good to have created a product that we believe will do a lot of good around the world, and help to make a lot of people’s lives better.

We initially set out to limit features for a first release, but along the way we decided to add more features. We came up with a few great ideas that we just had to implement, like automatic updates via the web, time tokens, and alternate limits.

Give the 14-day free trial a shot and let us know how it works out for you; if it helps control the time your kids spend on the computer, and if it reduces the stress in your life a little bit.

We have some great ideas on the drawing board for our next release, and we’re interested in hearing what would be useful to you as well.

Study: Kids’ TV, computer habits start early

CNN reports on the Kaiser Family Foundation study:

“We found out that kids today are growing up absolutely immersed in electronic media in this country, starting at the youngest ages,” says Kaiser’s Vicky Rideout, lead author of the study. “[At] even just a few months old, they’re watching TV, watching videos, using computers, playing video games.”

Hey Kids! Get outside and get some fresh air! Go play and work up an appetite before dinner!

Besides, Mom and Dad need a little peace and quiet! The chaotic noise gets out of control when you’ve got Spongebob on the TV, a gameboy blip-bleeping, and the tapping and beeping of the computer. I came home from work to deal with this crazyness?

Unplug the kids for a while for their own good, and for Mom and Dad’s peace-of-mind as well!
