Gaming Addiction Takes a Life
Typically when you read a story like this, it’s because the parents are drug addicts and were too busy tripping to care for their child. But in this case, online games was the drug of choice.
Infant Daughter Dies as Parents Play Online Game
Insane…
I’m not implying that online games are the problem here… But what on Earth happens to people who so completely lose themselves in the game that they forget about reality? About 8 or more years ago, I had a copy of Doom, and after I was too tired to work on my studies, I would occasionally fire up Doom. Hours later, I would realize that I had to get up the next morning and go to work. It would be 2:30AM. What was I doing!

Oh man, oh man. People do some of the strangest, most heartless things. A video game over their kid?

Maybe there is a progression that occurs with online gaming. For some, they dabble in it…never really get in too deep. But for the minority of gamers, in combination with certain triggers, gaming can become a compulsion or even an addiction. Personal story: My husband is a successful professional, wonderful and caring, who is well-liked. He coached my son’s soccer team this spring and received a red card for questioning a referee. He was required to miss the appropriate number of games by the soccer club but the club felt he should not be coach. He became socially humiliated, and had great difficulty interacting with people associated with soccer in our community. He turned to online gaming (World of Warcraft). He now plays 12-18 hours per day when he isn’t working 12 hour shifts. He ignored his own son’s birthday a few weeks ago, did not buy him a thing or acknowlege/celebrate the day. Online gaming can progress to more than a fun pastime–it can provide an alternate idenity and even satisfy some social needs. If I go to a psychologist for help, I risk publicly humiliating my husband too close to his profession. Also, is it my job to rescue him? He has also dabbled in porn, tobacco, and has been obsessed with having sex in the past but never sought professional help. Currently, he chews nicorette gum while he plays the game and drinks diet coke but has little desire to interact with his family or maintain friendships. We used to fly fish, take karate, play soccer, bike, shop, hold hands, use our hot tub, see films..do many fun things..only 4 months ago. If I was included in his game, would I want to play it all the time too? It is striking that for the first time I am not at the center of his obsession, in fact my sons and I are completely shut out.

That’s real tragedy, but you can not blame the games, just those people have no self-control, game just for fun, not for tragedy
