Christmas Tree Poll

by mark on December 2, 2008

In the previous post, I talked about a weekend trip to get a tree. I’m obviously a real tree type. How about you?

What kind if Christmas tree for you this year?
The real thing.
Artificial. It’s easier.
Artificial. Trees are for hugging.
Bah Humbug. No Tree for me.

Both. I grew up with a fake tree. We had it for many years. It’s practically Americana. If anyone has a classic silver tree in their attic and they want to donate it to me, let me know. I’ll pay the shipping of course. We are also getting the “main” tree that goes in the window. Modest family, modest size. I prefer gaudy in the traditional German sense. My wife prefers something more aesthetically compatible with the rooms regular decor hence a total drag. Merry Xmas all.

I can see trying to sync up the ornaments, garland and tinsel colors to match the room decor, but I’d still want a regular tree. I mean, a Christmas tree isn’t a piece of furniture. It’s a Christmas tree! It’s supposed to look like something that is festive and traditional. Not like something you’d find in Pier One.

I grew up having both types of trees – real and fake, depending on my parent’s moods that year. Since being an adult we’ve always had the real thing. I love the smell, the experience of being chilly and taking the kids and dog to the tree farm. We go to the same farm every year. We take a hayride out the field, to another field just to make sure we’ve spied the best. If there happens to be snow… well I have 4 boys and 1 big one, so it’s lots of fun. Then it’s back to the barn for hot apple cider. But my favorite part is decorating. We collect ornaments from places we visit. The kids like to recall where and when we picked up this one or that. My favorites are the ones we made together. My mom used to “re-arrange” the ornaments my sister and I put on. Balance! I don’t move a thing – unless its my favorite glass one that’s going to end upon the floor. It’s all about tradition, memories and spending time together. Plus a little spiked eggnog. Thanks for the trip down memory lane… we’re headed out to the farm this weekend.
